THEOLOGY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Theology and Religious Studies Degrees

Despite theology and religious studies being seemingly specific, graduates with degrees in the subject go on to fulfil many varied careers. This is because such a degree is within the realms of the humanity field, and scholars of such learn how to interpret information and improve their critical thinking skills.

Is theology a study path you would like to embark on? What options do you have in terms of study? Let’s look at why theology is a popular subject, and how a degree can help you land that dream job.

What is a Theology Degree About?

Theology involves learning about different world religions, yet there is more to the subject than this. You will learn how to critique passages from religious texts and how to interpret them. There will be much debate and discussion.

Theology students need to be critical thinkers. You will learn about different languages, about the relationship between certain religions and their social context, and as all this indicates, there is a large element of history involved.

Some theology students do find employment in a diocese. Others go on to become religious studies teachers. Yet many are employed in other professions such as law, accountancy, and any role that requires interpretation and critical thinking skills. What are your study options?

Theology Study Options

A theology degree is a good grounding in humanities and history. You can choose to study for a bachelor's degree – a four-year course at university – or begin with an associate degree, which is a two-year foundation that can be followed at a junior college. Once completed, the option is there to convert it to a bachelor's degree with a further two years at university.

An Associate of Science (AS) degree will provide the student with skills in research and debating, and is an acceptable qualification for a wide range of potential roles.

The master’s degree and Doctorate in Theology are the next steps in post-graduate education. Should you choose to pursue this route, the possibilities for high-earning roles are endless.

Many theology graduates take roles in community aid, or in counseling. Others work in the church, in hospitals, or perform government roles. There is no bar to what one can do with a theology and religious studies degree.

Once you have made a decision to head down this study route, you will be embarking on a rewarding journey that will present many questions. It is an education in the world at large, and one that will introduce you to a broader range of cultures than you knew existed.

Conclusion

There are several ways to study for your theology degree. You will find online study courses that are convenient and may be taken in your own time. There are also hybrid courses that combine online and on-campus teaching. Or you can enrol at university and study full time.

Theology is a subject of great interest, and not only to those who follow a religion. Your degree will open many doors to various possible employment options.
